Episode #7 Show Notes
Host: Dr. Warren Lamb
Guest: Pastor Paul Tautges
Topic: “Remade: Embracing Your Complete Identity in Christ”

Summary
In this episode of The Soul Care Podcast, host Warren Lamb interviews Paul Tautges, a respected voice in the world of biblical counseling and soul care. They discuss Tautges' new book, "Remade: Experiencing Your Complete Identity in Christ," which explores the importance of identity in Christ and offers a refreshing perspective on finding one's identity in relationship with Jesus rather than external circumstances or accomplishments. The book is divided into three lenses: the sinner lens, the saint lens, and the sufferer lens, each providing a unique perspective on our identity in Christ. Tautges also shares the metaphor of kintsugi, an ancient Japanese art form that repairs broken pottery with gold, symbolizing God's redemptive work in our brokenness.
It is an honor to speak with a man whose contributions to the Christian faith, especially in the realm of biblical counseling and soul care, are so extensive. He has been in gospel ministry for over 30 years and serves as one of the pastors of Cornerstone Community Church in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, which is in the Cleveland area. He is also an adjunct professor at Masters University in California, a certified biblical counselor and teaching fellow for the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors, and a council board member of the Biblical Counseling Coalition. He also serves as editor for the popular LifeLine mini-book series from Shepherd Press and blogs regularly at Counseling One Another, the Biblical Counseling Coalition, and Crosswalk.
Ask him about himself, and he puts it simply: “By God’s grace, I’m a husband, dad, grandpa, and pastor at Cornerstone Community Church in Mayfield Heights, OH. I love Christ because He first loved me.”
Humble, friendly, and approachable, he has written or edited over 60 books and mini-books, including “A Small Book for the Hurting Heart,” the 31-day devotional “Anxiety: Knowing God’s Peace;” then there is “Counseling One Another,” a mainstay in the biblical counseling and soul care world, and, of course, his newest work, “Remade: Embracing Your Complete Identity in Christ.”

Takeaways
Our identity is not found in external circumstances or accomplishments, but in our relationship with Jesus Christ.
Understanding our identity in Christ is crucial for biblical counseling and soul care.
The book "Remade" explores three lenses of identity: the saint lens, the sinner lens, and the sufferer lens. The order is important.
Suffering is a tool that God uses to sanctify us and conform us to the image of Christ.

Episode 4 - Anxiety

Wednesday Feb 07, 2024

Wednesday Feb 07, 2024

Episode #4 Show Notes
Hosts: Jinda Reinig, Kimberly Willess, and Dr. Warren Lamb
Topic: Anxiety

Summary
What is anxiety? What causes it? Is there a solution other than medication? In this episode, Dr. Warren Lamb compares and contrasts the clinical approach with the biblical approach and discusses why biblical soul care for anxiety is more viable. Part of the discussion includes a case study of a person who still walks in freedom from debilitating anxiety.

Takeaways
Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive fear and anxiety, often rooted in a lack of trust and belief in God's control and goodness.
Toxic shame and a distorted self-worth can contribute to anxiety, but shifting focus and believing in God's nature and character can help overcome it.
Comparing oneself to others and feeling entitled to a pain-free life can perpetuate anxiety and hinder healing.
Understanding that God is aware of our circumstances and has a greater plan can provide comfort and peace in the midst of anxiety.
Teaching others about self-worth and helping them understand God's love and protection can be a powerful tool in overcoming anxiety. Breathing techniques like box breathing can help take control of the body's response to anxiety.
Medication may not address the underlying causes of anxiety and can have limitations in treating depression and anxiety.
Resiliency factors play a crucial role in preventing ongoing woundedness from traumatic events.
History does not define us, and we have the power to change our beliefs and narrative around anxiety.

Scripture Mentioned
Genesis 50:20

Warrenisms
“Anxiety is like running around trying to put out fires that have not been lit.”

“History is not destiny. Our history does not define us; it merely explains us.”
